Static Testing: What it is, Obligation, Examples of Activities

" Static testing is a procedure with the purpose of evaluating and judging the performance of structural works and components of a building. If the procedure is successful and the property is then found to be suitable, a certificate of acceptance is obtained. "

What is static testing?

Static testing is a procedure with the purpose of evaluating and judging the performance of structural works and components. It is a procedure with the purpose of evaluating and judging the performance of structural works and components. If the procedure is successful and the property is then found to be suitable, a certificate of acceptance is obtained.

When should static testing be carried out?

The works cannot be put into operation before the static inspection is carried out, which, except in special cases, is done during construction.

Obligation of static testing of works

In general, static testing of works is mandatory whenever a structural element is built in any material (reinforced concrete, wood, steel, etc.). Structural testing is required in the case of new construction or expansion or renovation of existing construction.

It is also compulsory in seismic retrofitting and improvement works but not on minor works such as, for example, rebuilding an attic, repairs or making internal stairs.

Who is in charge of testing?

The tester or testing company is appointed by the developer and must possess certain basic characteristics:

  • Be duly registered in the registers of the relevant professional bodies
  • Must not have participated in the work being tested at any stage of design, supervision and execution

Requirements for static inspection

Structural testing of civil engineering works should include the following tasks:

  1. Control of what is prescribed and regulated by the
Presidential Decree No. 380 of June 6, 2001
  2. Inspection of the work and checking that the design requirements have been implemented and experimental controls have been carried out.
  3. Examination of material test certificates with ascertainment of the number of samples taken and their compliance and checking that the results obtained from the tests are compatible with the acceptance criteria
  4. Control of the minutes and results of any load tests ordered by the Construction Manager
  5. Examination of the design of the work from the general approach to the design, to the budgeted actions
  6. Review of investigations carried out in the design and construction phases as prescribed by law
